To no one’s surprise, the Saville Centre’s Laura Crocker and
Val Sweeting advanced to Saturday morning’s A Event final in the Northern Alberta Curling Association’s women’s playdown at Cold Lake.
Crocker, whose team consists of three-quarters of her two-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship rink at Wilfrid Laurier, ranked 12th on the World Curling Tour money list this season with $15,300 in winnings.
Crocker defeated Tiffany Game of the Crestwood 8-7 in an A Event semifinal Friday.
Meanwhile, Sweeting, the 2010 Alberta women’s champ, downed Tiffany Steuber 7-3 in the other A Event semifinal.
Sweeting qualified in five of nine events and won $12,100 on the WCT during the fall.
Men’s city playdown
Rick Kravontka of the Ottewell pulled off the biggest upset in the first draw of the Edmonton men’s playdown at the Jasper Place Curling Club. Kravontka knocked off Tom Appelman of the Saville 7-6 in an extra end. Appelman bounced back to win his second game 8-3 over Dale Throndson of the Saville.
In other games of note, Kevin Park opened with a 4-3 win over Wade White and Glen Kennedy doubled up Warren Cross of the Saville 8-4.
The two A Event finals are at 10 a.m. Saturday; the B finals at 6 p.m. The C finals start at 2 p.m. Sunday.
